Environmental Benefits of Hybrid Electric Vehicles

hondaThere are a number of environmental benefits associated with hybrid electric vehicles. Understanding what they are is one of the keys to getting the most out of your knowledge of these vehicles.

Gasoline, when it is burned, is capable of producing large amounts of carbon dioxide, which is the major gas that is responsible for contributing to global warming. These hybrid electric vehicles are not completely dependent on the use of gasoline as their sole source of power, and therefore they have worked to reduce the emissions of harmful pollutants such as carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide and nitrogen oxide. One concrete example of this concept is the Toyota Prius, a hybrid vehicle that only consumes 4 liters worth of gasoline, allowing it to run for more than 100 kilometers. The Toyota Prius only emits approximately 104 grams worth of carbon dioxide with every kilometer that it travels.

Emission from automobiles makes up one third of the world’s total emissions of carbon dioxide, which is more than the emissions that are produced both by homes and by factories across the globe. If we do not work to reduce these pollutants, then mankind is going to face the terrifying effect associated with global warming much, much sooner than we are actually going to be prepared for. These greenhouse gasses that are in the atmosphere are working to deplete the ozone layer, which is the earth’s protection from the sun and its harmful heat. Some of the negative effects of global warming include melting of the polar ice caps in the arctic region, which are causing floods and the death of animals and plants that are sensitive to this increase in heat. With prolonged summer seasons and shortened winter seasons, people could be harmed as well.

Another environmental pro associated with hybrid electric vehicles is the reduction in exploitation of non-renewable energy sources such as gasoline and other similar petroleum products. Such products are generated out of fossil fuels, and as such, they are not capable of being recycled. If we cut down on our gasoline usage, then these natural resources will be capable of being conserved so that we can use them for other vital purposes rather than simply as fuels for our automobiles. Every day we are consuming 8.2 million barrels of gasoline to drive our cars and trucks. If the demand for this oil is greatly reduced then we will be much less dependent on the import of petroleum to support the every day driving needs of our country.

Preference, price and trend are all considerations you should be making any time you buy a vehicle, but you should also be thinking about fuel efficiency and environmental friendliness because these are also vital factors in choosing the right vehicle in this day and age.

Glossary: Hybrid Car Technology

hybridHybrid cars are gaining in popularity and this is leading people to want to know more about hybrid car technology. As a result, we have put together this brief glossary of hybrid car technology terms, the least you need to know. This will be a good foundation for you to build upon for learning about hybrid car technologies and how they are changing the world.

AER - This stands for All Electric Range, and describes the distance measurement that is used for a hybrid’s ability to rely only on electric drive.

By-Wire Technology - This is similar to the fly by wire technology that you find in fighter planes, and is designed to replace the mechanical connections with electrical ones in order to reduce weight while providing responsiveness that is more sophisticated as well as more reliable.

CaFCP – This stands for the California Fuel Cell Partnership. This is a collaborative of manufacturers of vehicles, fuel cell companies and energy companies with government agencies designed to promote suitable energy futures while increasing the efficiency of energy and reducing greenhouse gas emissions if not removing them completely.

CBG - This stands for Cleaner Burning Gasoline and refers to a fuel meeting the requirements established by the California ARB. All gasoline that is sold to be used in motor vehicles have to meet these requirements, and it has been this way since the Spring of 1996.

Electric Only Mode - This is also referred to as stealth mode and is a mode that allows vehicles to drive at lower speeds without the engine ever turning on.

HFEDS – This stands for Highway Fuel Economy Driving Schedule. This is one of the fuel economy tests by the EPA, consisting of a number of driving routines and driving schedules that are performed within a laboratory setting.

Hybrid Car Battery - There are two different batteries with a hybrid vehicle, one which is a traction battery and the other which is an auxiliary battery, a 12 volt battery that powers the car’s computers and its accessories.

Hybrid Car Engine - In hybrid vehicles, the term ‘engine’ refers to a gasoline combustion engine rather than an electrical motor.

Hybrid Synergy Drive - This is the next-gel hybrid power train from Toyota, which improves upon the Hybrid System from Toyota that is in the original Prius vehicles.

Low Emissions Level Standards - There are several different standards for measurement when it comes to low emission vehicles, including the LEV II, ULEV and SULEV standards from the Air Resources Board in California. LEV stands for Low Emissions Vehicle, ULEV stands for Ultra Low Emissions Vehicle and SULEV stands for Super Ultra Low Emission Vehicle standards. There is a federal standard as well, which is known as Tier 2-Bin 3.
