Companies Using Hybrid Diesel Electric Technologies

The Toronto Transit system, BC Transit and UPS have something in common these days—hybrid diesel electric technology. The Toronto Transit Commission is actually about to switch away from the technology, while BC Transit intends to keep using it, and UPS is about to embrace it.

Diesel electric hybrid buses already run in Toronto, and they’re not performing as well as expected. In fact, they’re showing less than half the fuel savings predicted by the hybrid diesel electric manufacturers. They are saving on fuel, but only about 10 to 13 percent, instead of the 20 to 30 percent predicted. They’re also having some problems with some of the batteries. Toronto plans to switch back to regular buses soon.

B. C. Transit uses hybrid diesel electric buses, but intends to keep using them over at least the next year to try to get a more accurate picture of the savings they offer. They’re not having the same battery problems as the Toronto Transit system, but the batteries they use are different and a bit more advanced. The hybrid diesel electric batteries used in B. C. are nickel metal hydride, where the Toronto buses use the older lead-acid technology.

The B. C. Transit system has discovered that the hybrid diesel electric buses perform better with more efficiency on stop-and-go routes, rather than longer haul routes that seem to tax the batteries and offer less savings. The cost of purchasing a hybrid bus figures in heavily in the decision to keep them or go back to the old diesel buses. While a tax credit of $10,000 is offered for the purchase of a hybrid diesel electric bus, that’s does little to offset the difference of $225,000 per bus.

But B. C. Transit does intend to stick with the technology for now, as hybrid diesel electric buses come down in price, and benefit from new lighter weight and more powerful battery technology. After another year, they’ll determine whether to purchase more hybrid diesel buses, and how many to purchase.

Another big company about to use hybrid diesel electric technology is the United Parcel Service (UPS). In 2009 they’re planning to purchase 7 trucks using the hybrid hydraulic diesel technology, with the first two running Minneapolis, Minnesota. UPS already has what’s called its “Green Fleet,” a 1600-vehicle strong set of UPS trucks that are either electric hybrids or run on natural gas. These will be the first hybrid diesel electric trucks they’ve tested, in the hopes of using more.

Hydraulic hybrids pull energy from the braking system just as electric hybrids do, but a hydraulic pump pulls the energy instead of an electric motor, and replaces the transmission and drive shaft, making for easier stop-and-go movement and accelerating. Because UPS trucks generally stop between 80 and 100 times per day and run in urban areas with multiple stop lights, the hydraulic hybrid diesel technology seems to be a perfect fit, and may start the trend to use hydraulic technology in hybrid diesel electric cars.

Introduction to the Hybrid Diesel Electric Car

dodgeramThe hybrid diesel electric car has been under develop since as far back as early 1993 in the United States, but the only hybrid diesel electric vehicle to reach production so far has been the Dodge Ram. The Dodge Ram hybrid diesel electric car is build on the chassis for the Ram Heavy Duty, 2500 / 3500 and will be equipped with diesel electric hybrid propulsion. Diesel works well in conjunction with hybrid vehicles because it offers fuel economy savings with a diesel in comparison to similar gasoline powered engines.

The main reason for why customers are going to opt for hybrid diesel electric vehicles like the Dodge Ram are the improved fuel economy of up to 15 percent over comparable vehicles, and lower emissions. The Dodge Ram hybrid diesel electric is also going to offer another excellent benefit: This truck is going to be able to operate as an electric generator, providing as much as 110/220-volt AC power which will be extremely useful for construction job sites, during power emergencies and so on.

For passenger cars in European countries, there is an Opel Astra Diesel hybrid diesel electric that uses a two mode full hybrid system based on co development between GM and Daimler Chrysler. The Opel Astra GTC Coupe hybrid diesel electric was introduced in the North American International Auto Show in Detroit, Michigan in 2005. This hybrid diesel electric vehicle is equipped with a diesel engine with 125 horsepower and a 1.7 liter CDTI diesel. Compared to standard Astra diesel vehicle, the Astra Diesel hybrid electric vehicle happens to be a surprising 25 percent more fuel efficient, which is a serious savings. The Opel Astra hybrid diesel electric is a popular car that will be sold in many European countries, but it will not see the light of day in the markets in the United States.

Another diesel hybrid vehicle that is being manufactured is the Peugeot Citroen. This hybrid diesel electric exists as an effort to achieve a combined fuel economy by as much as 70 miles per gallon, with a significant decrease in carbon-dioxide emissions to only 90 grams for every 0.62 miles. In comparison, the Toyota Prius, an American hybrid, delivers 55 miles to the gallon and the carbon-dioxides average at about 104 grams per 0.62 miles. Unfortunately, this car is purely a concept right now and it is not known whether this particular hybrid diesel electric vehicle will ever see the light of day.

The future seems to be bright when it comes to most hybrid diesel electric concepts, however. There have been numerous studies that have shown that greenhouse gas emissions absolutely will be reduced by these hybrid diesel electric vehicles as they are produced and sold. The impact that hybrid diesel electric vehicles can actually be extremely surprising, making the research behind these vehicles even more important.

The New BMW Diesels, Now Hitting the US

The new BMW X5 xDrive35d is one of the new 2009 cars to hit the market, alongside the updated BMW 335d sedan. The X5 xDrive35d is a hybrid that runs on diesel, utilizing the technology that has been tested in the European market for the past couple of years. Now the clean running vehicle will reach the American shores, and this can only mean good things for the US auto industry. The X5 xDrive35d features the German brand’s safety standards and the promise of a sports car like ride. If it were not for the diesel badge on the vehicle, you would think it was a gas SUV.

The same thing can be said for once you climb into the auto. The interiors of the X5 xDrive35d are identical to a BMW gas based SUV, except for the diesel badge and 4k rpm red line. The layout of the console and controls are accented by wood trim and leather. The vehicle can comfortably seat five, while the rear seats can fold for cargo’s sake. There are also more pockets for personal items than a squirrel has places for hiding its food.

The moment you turn the ignition, you will notice that the X5 xDrive35d’s three liter diesel engine comes to life with the faintest of purrs, at the mere press of a button. It quickly idles in to a smooth purr, without any of the characteristic rattling and harsh sound or smelly emissions that one would expect from a diesel engine. The X5 xDrive35d is capable of putting out 265 horses with 425 ft-lbs of torque. The six speed automatic transmission has a brain that encompasses the entire decision free system know as the xDrive. There is also a twin variable, turbo charging system to eliminate lag and bolster the overall performance of the vehicle.

There is plenty of thrust for the driver, as well as a generous amount of grip and push for passing and merging in traffic. All the while the driver is given no clues as to the fact that the car is a diesel fueled hybrid. The reason is that the X5 xDrive35d is outfitted with a BMW engine, which means quality that is unmatched. The most seasoned of drivers will have fun behind the wheel of the X5 xDrive35d. The precision in steering is matched by the diesel engine’s performance, while the chassis and brakes would not be foreign on a more sporty vehicle. Compared to the standard model of the SUV, the diesel engine will consume a quarter less fuel.

The likely buyer of the X5 xDrive35d will be those who drive long distances and those looking to reduce their ecological impact. Others may shy away because of their weariness of diesel technology, but the BMW X5 xDrive35d excellently demonstrates that a compromise free, smooth running diesel engine is possible, and hopefully that will boost expectations and interest in the X5 xDrive35d as well as diesel engines in general.

The US Braces for the Diesel Hybrid

Congress has made a offer to car manufacturers which has the auto makers scrambling. They are working to create a short term plan for the release more fuel efficient vehicles into the market in order to help reform the energy situation in the US. This will give automakers aid in the amount of $25 billion. The current plan looks to be ending current car design lines and designing newer, more energy efficient automobiles. The current golden child of the plan is the hybrid diesel electric auto, a star of energy efficiency from Europe. This technology looks to out perform current gasoline hybrid vehicles in terms of energy efficiency.

This technology has been utilized by the train industry since the 1920s. This tested technology has improved the efficiency of transit systems and automakers hope to be able to adapt it to automobiles. The current leader in adaptation is Volkswagen, utilizing the diesel electric technology in their VW Golf. The Golf is capable of up to 70 miles per gallon, but will not touch US soil. Doing so would be too expensive for the automaker, but where they fail many local manufactures stand to make it quite big.

The improving quality of cars and comfort they provide has lead to another issue stifling the switch over to hybrid vehicles. More and more drivers are keeping their vehicles for longer and longer. Drivers are also buying more used cars, again thanks to the quality in which they have been made. The market seems ready for diesel electrics to enter the market. The need for fuel efficiency is growing and growing, and diesel electrics such as the VW Golf will be a phenomenal asset to the energy situation in the US.

It is thanks to the actions by Congress that automakers can make a truly good step forward for energy efficiency. Auto makers can create the means to sell vehicles that owners will want due to their energy efficiency and lasting capabilities. This will provide a means to pull the manufacturers out of the money hole that is gas and move to save with diesel electric vehicles.

Hybrid vehicles work by utilizing the combustion engine to generate electricity as opposed to generating motion. The electricity is used to power an electric motor to generate motion of the vehicle. This process is much more efficient in terms of converting fuel to motion. This increases gas mileage which will confer costs to the driver. Combine this with diesel fuel. Diesel, although more expensive, is more energetic per gallon, and with a highly efficient conversion process, 70 mile per gallon efficiencies are not unheard of.

The best chance for energy efficient vehicles in the US is the diesel electric. Congress’s offer of aid will stimulate local automakers to adopt technologies that have been proven in many markets. All in all, the new generation of automobiles will hit the market and the environment and consumer wallets will be much the better.

DIY Hybrid Diesel – The XR3 Hybrid

When it comes to diesel electric hybrid automobiles, the US has to wait until 2010 before we see the first commercial iteration, the VW Golf. For those who cannot wait, and have access to a garage full of power tools, there is an option. That option is the XR3 Hybrid. The kit car is a two passenger diesel electric hybrid. The car can achieve a maximum speed of 80 miles per hour, weighs in at about three quarters of a ton, and can get anywhere from 125 mpg to 225 mpg.

The design is based upon a three wheel platform, which combined with a specially designed hybrid drive system, results in the phenomenal fuel economy so far described. When just using the diesel component, the vehicle achieves 125 miles per gallon. Running hybrid enables the car to be used at the jaw dropping 225 mpg.

The plans that are available for the vehicle can be used to build the XR3 Hybrid, or the system can be integrated into an existing vehicle to improve fuel economy. The overall features that bestow upon the XR3 Hybrid its fuel economy are understood so that they can be implemented into other vehicles to boost their economy. For the enthusiast or experimenter, this is a vehicle that can improve fuel efficiency and provide enjoyable learning.

Fuel economy is achieved through maintaining two limits. The machine must be made as light as possible. Heavier cars need more energy to move, and as a result burn through more gasoline. The overall internal design and features of the system must remove enough mass so as to light, but not so much as to hinder structural stability. After this balance is achieved, the second limit to push is the efficiency of moving the remaining mass of the vehicle. That is where hybrid energy gets utilized.

The hybrid drive is a plug in based system. If you plug in the car, you can get around on the battery alone, for about 40 miles. Combined with the diesel engine, the vehicle becomes able to achieve up to 200 miles per gallon efficiency. Other hybrids are mild hybrids, in that they maintain charge. The electric system helps with acceleration, while the fuel system is what charges the electric system. The plug in hybrid gets its charge from the grid, and uses the electric system for all operations.

Mild hybrids like the Prius also require computer control and intervention to make sure the electric and fuels based systems are in sync. The XR3 is based upon the idea that the two are separate from each other. The front is controlled by the diesel engine while the rear is electric. Choices that are made for the various drive components will ultimately affect the efficiency of the vehicle. To build the vehicle completely to spec would cost upwards of $25,000 dollars. The diesel side of the vehicle would only cost less than $10,000. The separation of the two systems allows the builder to start with diesel, and then later upgrade to hybrid. If you are willing to put in the work and time, the XR3 is the vehicle to get.

How Hybrid Diesel Electric Technology Makes a Difference

While there are some hybrid diesel electric buses and locomotives operating in the US, the long-awaited Volkswagen hybrid diesel electric Golf that’s manufactured in Europe won’t be released to United States market as they had originally planned.  Volkswagen claims that the price of manufacturing the vehicle is too high.

The Dodge RAM HEV that was supposed to be released in 2005 never quite made it to the marketplace.  It was supposed to have an electric diesel hybrid drive train, and would have been the first diesel electric hybrid car on the market in the United States.

So in the United States, the outlook for hybrid diesel technology is not good.  Though large companies like UPS have programs in place to test hybrid diesel electric vans, and some cities like Seattle use hybrid buses, even operations like mining operations use hybrid mining trucks and some submarines are even diesel electric hybrids, it’s unlikely you’ll be able to purchase a diesel electric hybrid at your car dealership within the next few years.

The worldwide news for hybrid diesel electric cars is much better than the outlook in the United States, however. Peugeot has had diesel electric hybrid technology in the works for a while and has plans to release its PSA Peugeot Citroen to parts of Europe by 2011.  The company has just recently entered into a partnership with Bosch who will provide parts of the motor and the technology to help them get the cars on the road more quickly.  There is currently no plan to release this vehicle in the United States.

One can only hope that the Peugeot hybrid diesel electric vehicle proves a smashing success and that its success sparks interest in marketing the clean technology to the American consumer, or our hopes of having hybrid diesel electric cars to choose from might still be years away from being fulfilled.

Hybrid electric cars are starting to earn a market share in the United States, and given that hybrid diesel electric vehicles are being tested by companies like UPS, there is still hope. If the companies like UPS who are trying the technology to see if it lowers their costs of operation find favorable results that might help lead the way toward popularizing hybrid diesel electric cars.

Many believe that hybrid diesel electric technology is the true future of hybrid cars all over the world.  While hybrid electric cars seem to be the focus of most research, a diesel engine’s ability to burn biofuel instead of petroleum based fuels makes it a much greener choice than a standard engine. The combination of hybrid electric technology with an engine capable of providing more power while running less hot and using biofuels as opposed to petroleum should be on the top of the priority stack for companies who want to provide green solutions for consumers.

Given the current worldwide economic crises, it doesn’t seem promising that car manufacturers will sink the money necessary into hybrid diesel electric technology any faster than they have so far.

What’s Next for Electric Cars?

Electric cars have been the wave of the future, promising to provide us with the fuel-independent transportation alternative that we’ve been looking for. Car companies are scrambling to create the electric cars that we want, pushing out their newest electric models as quickly as they can.

It is important for everyone to completely understand where we are at with electric cars, where we are trying to get with these different electric cars, and what the future holds for this new type of vehicle.

Where Are We At?

Companies are currently working to get their first electric cars out on the market. Cars are coming out in limited numbers, with electric vehicles like the Electric Mini coming out in small test batches. The Chevy Volt is going to be the first mainstream, mass-market electric vehicle to be released. The car, expected to launch toward the end of 2010, is an electric hybrid that relies on the electric battery for up to 40 miles. Beyond that, the car will rely on the usual gasoline engine to be powered.

Where Are We Trying to Get?

Eventually, we are trying to get toward something that may seem somewhat unreachable. We are looking to have affordable electric cars that will be able to go hundreds of miles without a charge. As it currently stands, most cars will only be able to reach a maximum of 100 miles on one charge.

These cars will also be expensive; the Chevy Volt is expected to be about $40,000 dollars. Eventually, we are trying to get to electric cars that are cheaper and more affordable. The Ford EV is leading the charge, using a common platform and already-created base in an attempt to lower costs.

What Does the Future Hold

The next few years will be crucial for the electric car. Companies are looking to release their electric vehicles in 2011 and 2012, working to get their first cars on the market. The future for electric vehicles is bright, as many realize that this is the future of car technology. Unfortunately, we must go through the growing pains of a new and untested market before we can reach that future. Look for extended mileage, extended speeds, faster pick-up times, and faster charges as companies push through to newer models of their electric cars.

Electric cars have made incredible strides in recent years thanks to the rise in gas prices. As more and more people worry about the price of gas and dependence on foreign oil, electric cars will become more and more popular. Car companies have come a long way by finally coming out with vehicles, like the Chevy Volt, that rely on electricity for a part of their overall energy. As time moves forward, we look for affordable electric cars that can meet all of our needs, whether they be distance, speed, or cost. Eventually, these vehicles will meet our needs, and the technology will become as common as gasoline engines are today.

Tesla/Toyota Partnership

The market for electric vehicles is strong, as companies jockey to be the first to come to the market with an impressive offering. While the Chevy Volt will be the first mainstream and somewhat affordable electric car to hit the market, companies are still working to knock that company and that car off of their thrones.

Enter Tesla and Toyota. These two car companies are going to team up to develop the various aspects needed to create electric vehicles. The two will work together on the production system, the parts for these cars, the actual cars themselves, and the engineering support needed to handle it. The companies are also planning on forming a team of specialists that they will share, constantly working to be on the forefront of electric car technology.

This partnership will bring to life the shuttered Northern California plant from Toyota, as it will be the new facility for the engineering team and for the actual creation of the cars. Tesla will be releasing their model S car, one that is helping to bring power and force into the world of hybrids and electric cars. Toyota is planning on releasing their electric vehicle in 2012. This partnership will help to strengthen Toyota’s electric car offering.

So what does this partnership actually do for the world of electric vehicles? The partnership is going to create a strong bond between two companies who are looking to penetrate the electric car market. Tesla helps to bring style and power to the table, while Toyota helps to bring experience in the market, thanks to the Toyota Prius. Toyota already works to produce cars on an incredible mass market, helping to bring Tesla into a completely different vehicle game.

The result could easily be one of the best electric vehicles on the market as both companies combine their unique powers in the car industry. The companies are going to have the power to work a little harder on new technology and are creating a powerful joint team that will work to create an affordable and accessible electric car.

While the partnership will take a few years to actually get into full force, the results will be somewhat immediate. You can expect to see traces of this powerful partnership in Toyota’s 2012 electric offering. This will serve as a tester for the concepts that the partnership will crank out, giving them the feedback that they need to create a strong vehicle.

While some look down on these collaborations, others realize the importance that they will have on the overall electric vehicle market. These companies will combine to create electric cars that can go further, for cheaper, and at faster speeds. In the end, these partnerships will completely push the technology of electric vehicles, helping to move the cars closer to our expectations. While the change will be slow, Toyota and Tesla will be at the head of the pack.

20th Annual Environmental Media Awards

emaBoth Toyota as well as Lexus are currently quite proud to be the presenting sponsors for the upcoming 20th annual Environmental Media Awards. The Environmental Media Awards is a star-studded event that salutes all of the creative teams that are behind film, music as well as television productions which specifically raise the public awareness for certain environmental issues. This is done through incorporating certain environmental images into the messages of their work as well as greening up their operations through various means.

The nominees for awards this year include “Grey’s Anatomy” as well as “The Simpsons” in the television category.

According to Dian Ogilvie, who is the senior VP for the Toyota Motor Corporation in North America said that the entertainment industry is playing an important role in raising a lot of awareness about environmental issues. These Environmental Media Awards are designed to honor all of the creative minds that have been educating, influencing and inspiring behavior that is environmentally responsible.

Toyota has brought a number of environmentally responsible decisions and choices to the roads. They have done this by creating a number of vehicles working in conjunction with the environment. Lexus and Toyota combined together offer seven different gas and electric hybrid vehicles that range from a mid sized sedan sized vehicle to an SUV. Toyota’s core technology right now is hybrid vehicles, and all of the environmental benefits that they offer are both clear as well as measurable. Early on in this year, the Lexus and Toyota hybrid global sales reached to 2,000,000 units, and 1 million of those units were sold in the United States alone. The total hybrid sales across the globe have so far led to an approximation of 11 million tons fewer of Co2 emissions versus gasoline vehicles with a similar size as well as performance.

Lexus is leading the luxury automobile brand, and they have four different hybrids in their car line up. They made their mark in the year 2005 when they introduced the first luxury hybrid vehicle, which was the RX 400h. Ever since then, a new type of hybrid vehicle has been released by Lexus nearly every single year. The RX, a hybrid vehicle, is a luxury utility style vehicle that is now known as the 450h, plus it is completely improved for the upcoming 2010 model year.

This was the year that Toyota made the announcement for the 2010 Prius in its third generation. This was the hybrid that began it all, and it is arriving bigger and even better while bringing brand new technological enhancements to the field including a ventilation system that is solar powered and a smaller and more efficient component system. The engine is larger, the interior is roomier, and the Prius is still the best in class when it comes to the EPA’s estimated mpg fuel economy, with a 50 mpg fuel economy estimate.
