Environmental Benefits of Hybrid Electric Vehicles

priusThere are a number of environmental benefits associated with hybrid electric vehicles. Understanding what they are is one of the keys to getting the most out of your knowledge of these vehicles.

Gasoline, when it is burned, is capable of producing large amounts of carbon dioxide, which is the major gas that is responsible for contributing to global warming. These hybrid electric vehicles are not completely dependent on the use of gasoline as their sole source of power, and therefore they have worked to reduce the emissions of harmful pollutants such as carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide and nitrogen oxide. One concrete example of this concept is the Toyota Prius, a hybrid vehicle that only consumes 4 liters worth of gasoline, allowing it to run for more than 100 kilometers. The Toyota Prius only emits approximately 104 grams worth of carbon dioxide with every kilometer that it travels.

Emission from automobiles makes up one third of the world’s total emissions of carbon dioxide, which is more than the emissions that are produced both by homes and by factories across the globe. If we do not work to reduce these pollutants, then mankind is going to face the terrifying effect associated with global warming much, much sooner than we are actually going to be prepared for. These greenhouse gasses that are in the atmosphere are working to deplete the ozone layer, which is the earth’s protection from the sun and its harmful heat. Some of the negative effects of global warming include melting of the polar ice caps in the arctic region, which are causing floods and the death of animals and plants that are sensitive to this increase in heat. With prolonged summer seasons and shortened winter seasons, people could be harmed as well.

Another environmental pro associated with hybrid electric vehicles is the reduction in exploitation of non-renewable energy sources such as gasoline and other similar petroleum products. Such products are generated out of fossil fuels, and as such, they are not capable of being recycled. If we cut down on our gasoline usage, then these natural resources will be capable of being conserved so that we can use them for other vital purposes rather than simply as fuels for our automobiles. Every day we are consuming 8.2 million barrels of gasoline to drive our cars and trucks. If the demand for this oil is greatly reduced then we will be much less dependent on the import of petroleum to support the every day driving needs of our country.

Preference, price and trend are all considerations you should be making any time you buy a vehicle, but you should also be thinking about fuel efficiency and environmental friendliness because these are also vital factors in choosing the right vehicle in this day and age.
