Hybrid cars are gaining in popularity and this is leading people to want to know more about hybrid car technology. As a result, we have put together this brief glossary of hybrid car technology terms, the least you need to know. This will be a good foundation for you to build upon for learning about hybrid car technologies and how they are changing the world.
AER - This stands for All Electric Range, and describes the distance measurement that is used for a hybrid’s ability to rely only on electric drive.
By-Wire Technology - This is similar to the fly by wire technology that you find in fighter planes, and is designed to replace the mechanical connections with electrical ones in order to reduce weight while providing responsiveness that is more sophisticated as well as more reliable.
CaFCP – This stands for the California Fuel Cell Partnership. This is a collaborative of manufacturers of vehicles, fuel cell companies and energy companies with government agencies designed to promote suitable energy futures while increasing the efficiency of energy and reducing greenhouse gas emissions if not removing them completely.
CBG - This stands for Cleaner Burning Gasoline and refers to a fuel meeting the requirements established by the California ARB. All gasoline that is sold to be used in motor vehicles have to meet these requirements, and it has been this way since the Spring of 1996.
Electric Only Mode - This is also referred to as stealth mode and is a mode that allows vehicles to drive at lower speeds without the engine ever turning on.
HFEDS – This stands for Highway Fuel Economy Driving Schedule. This is one of the fuel economy tests by the EPA, consisting of a number of driving routines and driving schedules that are performed within a laboratory setting.
Hybrid Car Battery - There are two different batteries with a hybrid vehicle, one which is a traction battery and the other which is an auxiliary battery, a 12 volt battery that powers the car’s computers and its accessories.
Hybrid Car Engine - In hybrid vehicles, the term ‘engine’ refers to a gasoline combustion engine rather than an electrical motor.
Hybrid Synergy Drive - This is the next-gel hybrid power train from Toyota, which improves upon the Hybrid System from Toyota that is in the original Prius vehicles.
Low Emissions Level Standards - There are several different standards for measurement when it comes to low emission vehicles, including the LEV II, ULEV and SULEV standards from the Air Resources Board in California. LEV stands for Low Emissions Vehicle, ULEV stands for Ultra Low Emissions Vehicle and SULEV stands for Super Ultra Low Emission Vehicle standards. There is a federal standard as well, which is known as Tier 2-Bin 3.
