What is a Plug in Hybrid Electric Vehicle?

pluginA PHEV (Plug in Hybrid Electric Vehicle) is a vehicle that has batteries on board that can now be charged via the standard household electrical outlet. PHEVs still have the internal combustion engine and the batteries they were manufactured with, they have just had that one modification made. Plug in Hybrid Electric Vehicles have an advantage in that when they run only on their electrical charge, they a further reduction of 20% to 30% in energy consumption over what would be used running the gasoline engine. This is great for the consumer as well as the environment, since these cars make that much less greenhouse gas and overall pollution.

The first Plug in Hybrid Electric Vehicles to be made by the commercial automakers should be produced in 2009, with other companies following in 2010. As was alluded to in the beginning, it is actually possible to have a PHEV right this moment through conversion kits. That Prius you see everyday on the way to work may just be a PHEV.

These plug in style hybrid vehicles are often driven in a mode that is known as charge depleting mode, at least at first, where they are running exclusively from cheaper battery power. However, once the battery power reaches a certain level of depletion, then the internal combustion engine is going to kick in. The more advanced types of PHEVs can use what is known as blended mode, allowing them to drive in the different modes depending on what maximum level of energy efficiency can be achieved during a long trip.

As of now, it is currently unclear as to what the range will be for all-electric driving using the newer models of PHEVs, but it should also be relatively easy to determine, because it is likely that most of these vehicles are going to come in a number of denominations, such as the PHEV 50, which would have a 50-mile range for all electric driving.

Plug in style hybrid electric vehicles are soon going to be available on the mass commercial market. They are likely going to be a significant means for reducing our world’s dependence on fossil fuels while simultaneously reducing our contributions to global warming as well as the financial and economic stress that is placed on people that cannot afford traditional vehicles, or to keep their vehicle filled with gasoline. For all of these great reasons, we should all be hoping that the PHEV technology continues to develop so that it can be a widespread method of transportation, as well as a preferred method of transportation for many people around the country.

In recent years, the popularity of ‘green’ cars has been steadily increasing across the country. When people think of fuel efficient cars, the first thing they think of is hybrid gas-electric cars. However, technological advancements in hybrids have resulted in the emergence of hybrid electric diesel cars. Auto companies such as Ford, General Motors, and others are developing consumer hybrid diesel vehicles which are showing to be even more fuel efficient than hybrid gas-electric cars.

Diesel hybrid technology is not new technology. This type of technology has been used in large commercial vehicles such as trains, buses, large transport vehicles…etc. Using diesel hybrid technologies decreases fuel consumption by using the electric motor in carbon emission producing situations such as idling and accelerating. An important benefit of combining a diesel engine with an electric motor is it helps auto manufactures comply with strict government emission standards. Other commercial hybrid electric diesel vehicles that have been developed include: GM’s hybrid diesel-electric military truck, mining vehicles such as the Keaton Vandersteen LeTourneau L-2350 wheel loader, NASA’s big Crawler Transporters, Liebherr T 282B dump truck, Mitsubishi Fuso Canter Eco Hybrid, and various types of hybrid electric tractors.

In recent years, auto companies have now begun releasing diesel hybrid consumer vehicles. For instance, GM unveiled the Opel Astra Diesel Hybrid which they claim boosts fuel economy by 25% over a conventional diesel vehicle.  DaimlerChrysler has developed a line of Dodge Ram hybrid electric vehicle diesel pickup trucks. Volkswagen has developed a diesel-electric hybrid version of their Rabbit. They claim only “89 grams of carbon dioxide per kilometer is produced.”

For years, hybrid electric diesel vehicles have been developed mostly for commercial purposes. Now these vehicles are being developed for consumers. This new generation of hybrid diesel cars is expected to become as popular as other hybrid cars. For this reason, more insurance companies will be insuring these vehicles allowing hybrid electric diesel owners to take advantage of their ‘green’ discounts. Owners of these vehicles can take advantage of discounts on their auto insurance of up to 10% which will allow them to acquire more cheap insurance quotes resulting in considerable savings, but they will also be doing their part to help protect the environment slow down global warming.

Volkswagen Plans to Introduce Diesel Electric Hybrid Vehicle

The diesel electric hybrid car is a phenomenon that is gaining serious notoriety in Europe, but now Volkswagen is taking this phenomenon one step further and bringing it to the United States by releasing a version of the VW Golf which will be officially unveiled sometime in the latter half of 2009 and intended for the 2010 model year. This is going to be the first American version of a hybrid diesel electric vehicle, making it quite a sensation already though it has at least a year before its official release.

The Golf Hatchback that is being released by Volkswagen is more readily known as the Rabbit in North America. It is planned to be unveiled in Geneva’s upcoming Motor Show. The information that has already been leaked regarding the Volkswagen Golf / Rabbit is quite promising, as this vehicle is said to have a fuel economy of 83.1 miles per gallon imperial, or 69.9 miles per gallon US. This car is offering much lower emissions, only releasing 89 grams of carbon dioxide per kilometer, which is a huge improvement over the Toyota Prius Hybrid, which in comparison emits 104 grams per kilometer of carbon dioxide.

The diesel engine that is being used in this unique Golf Hybrid from Volkswagen has been developed specifically to cater to consumers in the United States market, with Californian consumers targeted specifically. For this reason, this engine is going to meet all Euro 5 emissions criteria as well as passing the Tier 2 Bin 5 emissions standards, which is an even more stringent set of emissions standards. If you combine this with the fact that many forms of bio diesel are now being crafted from algae, and you will find yourself driving a much greener car than what is currently being offered on the road.

According to the station that first leaked the news about the Volkswagen Golf Hybrid Electric Vehicle, the technology that is going to be used in the Volkswagen Golf Hybrid is also going to be utilized in a wide variety of Volkswagen Group models including the Jetta Saloon, which is a sedan that sells in much greater numbers in the United States than both the Audi A3 and Rabbit combined.

A lot of information is still unknown about this particular vehicle, but what is known is relatively clear: A phenomenon that is quite popular in European countries, the hybrid diesel electric vehicle, is on its way to the United States and the rest of North America, giving American consumers a chance to take advantage of this unique technology which provides excellent mileage and lower emissions than many other hybrid vehicles. Diesel Electric Hybrid vehicles are vehicles that combine diesel engines with electric engines, allowing for vehicles that create less emissions, get more power on less gas, and are a great deal “greener” just by nature. Volkswagen is clearly taking the next logical step in green vehicle technology by providing the United States with a unique hybrid vehicle that truly packs a punch.

Introduction to the Hybrid Diesel Electric Car

The Dodge Ram hybrid diesel electric car is build on the chassis for the Ram Heavy Duty, 2500 / 3500 and will be equipped with diesel electric hybrid propulsion. Diesel works well in conjunction with hybrid vehicles because it offers fuel economy savings with a diesel in comparison to similar gasoline powered engines.

The main reason for why customers are going to opt for hybrid diesel electric vehicles like the Dodge Ram are the improved fuel economy of up to 15 percent over comparable vehicles, and lower emissions. The Dodge Ram hybrid diesel electric is also going to offer another excellent benefit: This truck is going to be able to operate as an electric generator, providing as much as 110/220-volt AC power which will be extremely useful for construction job sites, during power emergencies and so on.

For passenger cars in European countries, there is an Opel Astra Diesel hybrid diesel electric that uses a two mode full hybrid system based on co development between GM and Daimler Chrysler. The Opel Astra GTC Coupe hybrid diesel electric was introduced in the North American International Auto Show in Detroit, Michigan in 2005. This hybrid diesel electric vehicle is equipped with a diesel engine with 125 horsepower and a 1.7 liter CDTI diesel. Compared to standard Astra diesel vehicle, the Astra Diesel hybrid electric vehicle happens to be a surprising 25 percent more fuel efficient, which is a serious savings. The Opel Astra hybrid diesel electric is a popular car that will be sold in many European countries, but it will not see the light of day in the markets in the United States.

Another diesel hybrid vehicle that is being manufactured is the Peugeot Citroen. This hybrid diesel electric exists as an effort to achieve a combined fuel economy by as much as 70 miles per gallon, with a significant decrease in carbon-dioxide emissions to only 90 grams for every 0.62 miles. In comparison, the Toyota Prius, an American hybrid, delivers 55 miles to the gallon and the carbon-dioxides average at about 104 grams per 0.62 miles. Unfortunately, this car is purely a concept right now and it is not known whether this particular hybrid diesel electric vehicle will ever see the light of day.

The future seems to be bright when it comes to most hybrid diesel electric concepts, however. There have been numerous studies that have shown that greenhouse gas emissions absolutely will be reduced by these hybrid diesel electric vehicles as they are produced and sold. The impact that hybrid diesel electric vehicles can actually be extremely surprising, making the research behind these vehicles even more important.
