The New BMW Diesels, Now Hitting the US

The new BMW X5 xDrive35d is one of the new 2009 cars to hit the market, alongside the updated BMW 335d sedan. The X5 xDrive35d is a hybrid that runs on diesel, utilizing the technology that has been tested in the European market for the past couple of years. Now the clean running vehicle will reach the American shores, and this can only mean good things for the US auto industry. The X5 xDrive35d features the German brand’s safety standards and the promise of a sports car like ride. If it were not for the diesel badge on the vehicle, you would think it was a gas SUV.

The same thing can be said for once you climb into the auto. The interiors of the X5 xDrive35d are identical to a BMW gas based SUV, except for the diesel badge and 4k rpm red line. The layout of the console and controls are accented by wood trim and leather. The vehicle can comfortably seat five, while the rear seats can fold for cargo’s sake. There are also more pockets for personal items than a squirrel has places for hiding its food.

The moment you turn the ignition, you will notice that the X5 xDrive35d’s three liter diesel engine comes to life with the faintest of purrs, at the mere press of a button. It quickly idles in to a smooth purr, without any of the characteristic rattling and harsh sound or smelly emissions that one would expect from a diesel engine. The X5 xDrive35d is capable of putting out 265 horses with 425 ft-lbs of torque. The six speed automatic transmission has a brain that encompasses the entire decision free system know as the xDrive. There is also a twin variable, turbo charging system to eliminate lag and bolster the overall performance of the vehicle.

There is plenty of thrust for the driver, as well as a generous amount of grip and push for passing and merging in traffic. All the while the driver is given no clues as to the fact that the car is a diesel fueled hybrid. The reason is that the X5 xDrive35d is outfitted with a BMW engine, which means quality that is unmatched. The most seasoned of drivers will have fun behind the wheel of the X5 xDrive35d. The precision in steering is matched by the diesel engine’s performance, while the chassis and brakes would not be foreign on a more sporty vehicle. Compared to the standard model of the SUV, the diesel engine will consume a quarter less fuel.

The likely buyer of the X5 xDrive35d will be those who drive long distances and those looking to reduce their ecological impact. Others may shy away because of their weariness of diesel technology, but the BMW X5 xDrive35d excellently demonstrates that a compromise free, smooth running diesel engine is possible, and hopefully that will boost expectations and interest in the X5 xDrive35d as well as diesel engines in general.
